Heat & humidity
We’ve had 32 farm stands this year! Our ambitious goal for our first season farming together was to be a consistent source of safe healthy food for the community two times a week from May through November.
So I hate to report that we are canceling the farm stand this upcoming Saturday, August 16. We don’t have quite enough food to warrant opening the stand and having you drive out to the farm.
A couple of weeks ago Wes wrote about some challenges we faced this season. We did not anticipate the long stretch of hot humid weather or the bouts of extensive rain, but unpredictable weather really is a given.
While we are learning how to respond to the numerous challenges involved in farming, we’re not where we want to be YET. Between the insect pressure, weather, and disease, we have faced significant crop loss. As always, we are learning a lot!
The good news is our broccoli is coming along and the okra is going strong. We just planted carrots and sugar snap peas. Radishes, beets, collards, kale and lettuce will go in at the end of the month.
I am a Fall person to the core so I’m already thinking about crisp mornings, lower humidity, and eating sautéed collards daily. Plus, nothing makes me happier than having pumpkins for you in October and sweet potatoes in time for Thanksgiving! 🤞🏽
We’re so very sorry to cancel this Saturday. Thanks for your patience and understanding. You can look forward to Wes’s email next week about the ludicrous process of raising chickens (and roosters).
I highly recommend you attend the Willow Collaborative market this Saturday from 9 am-2pm right in the heart of the Powhatan Village. I used to work in the domestic violence field so their mission is close to my heart. You’ll score all sorts of local goods there!
Look at my amazing birthday gifts from Wes and my Mom: a REAL broadfork (vs pitchfork as sad alternative) and a brand spankin’ new stirrup hoe. 😍
